Secrets Of The River
DIRECTOR: Ben Cropp
PLOT: High in the rainforest mountain source, a picturesque creek is the birth place of a river in North Queensland. Hidden beneath the rainforest canopy are possums, platypus, and crayfish. As the river grows, and its banks widen and deepen, it teams with life with thousands of birds, dingoes, freshwater crocodiles, turtles and barramundi. We witness the amazing archer fish that shoots a jet of water and knocks insects down. Where the river finally meets the tidal sea, and the mangroves claim its shores, Ben catches succulent mud crabs, and meets the lord of the river mouth - the dangerous saltwater crocodile.

Taming The Tiger
PLOT: TAMING THE TIGERS is a gripping one-hour documentary showing the unique relationship between trainers and tigers in captivity. The programme addresses the question of whether tigers can be tamed or simply trained, with stories aplenty of tigers that have lost control and attacked their keepers. Tiger trainers around the world have been filmed for this special: from legendary Russian entertainer Nickolai Pavlenko; to Hollywood tiger specialist Rick Glassey, the man who teaches his tigers to perform for major movies. There are also moments of wonder as the cycle of tiger mating and birthing is recorded at a facility in Thailand. Rare footage of a tiger giving birth is shown, after which the new-born cub suckles from a large sow. One sequence involves tigers swimming, others show tigers being trained for public performances: leaping through hoops of fire, and walking on tight ropes. In one dramatic scene, 10 tigers walk side by side around a ring, controlled by one lone man and his baton. These are evocative images of powerful and innately aggressive animals, as they learn to trust and work with Man. And while they first appear to be big harmless pussy cats, their behaviour is anything but. One of the keepers being filmed has to be hospitalised after a particularly vicious attack. Four continents, four tiger experts... and their talent, the tigers. Tamed or just trained? The Beast Within
PLOT: The Beast Within - Living With Wild Animals follows colourful individuals around the world who live with animals normally considered wild and dangerous. The program examines their motives and shows the strong bonds established between man and beast. Stories include: * The Thai businessman who's pet elephant rampages around his living room, following instructions, painting murals and washing the family car. * The Colombian diver who loves the Caribbean so much he's saved hundreds of sharks, dolphins and turtles which now circle his isolated island retreat. * The Canadian environmentalist who shares a house with tame bears, monkeys and lynx. * The Australian ex-circus owner who shares the family swimming pool with swimming tigers. * The Thai women who live with endangered gibbons that create havoc in their home. * The Minnesota mother who takes her tamed lemurs and coatamundis shopping and banking in the family car. * The Miami zoo keeper who cares at home for a delightful orangutan which has cerebral palsy. * The Tiger Monks who have raised 9 orphaned tigers since birth and now take them for a walk to a quarry where they play games with them and ride them like horses. Many of the animals featured have been confiscated or abandoned, others are being saved from extinction. Whatever the reason these relationships have some startling consequences. The Coral Reefs Are Daying
PLOT: Coral reefs face many threats. Some are natural stresses, such as hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons, earthquakes, or plagues of coral-eating predators like the crown of thorns starfish, about which we can do little. These stresses usually are very episodic or irregular in both space and time, and really healthy reefs will recover from them over time. In a completely different category are the human caused stresses to reefs. These stresses are persistent and constantly intensifying. Coral reefs cannot recover from such ever-present, worsening stresses. The end result of this human-impacted stress is that reefs now have trouble recovering from natural stresses (such as hurricanes) which they otherwise would be able to bounce back from. The causes, effects, and solutions to human-caused stresses are all well understood. Coral reefs face many threats.
